Opinions are divided as to whether listening to music while you work is beneficial or distracting. Some people prefer working in silence, while others swear that listening to their favourite tunes helps them to be more productive.
Something known as the ‘Mozart Effect’ has spawned extensive research, and findings indicate that listening to the music of Wolfgang Amadeus can improve something called ‘spatial-temporal reasoning’ in the short term. This is the facility to visualise and manipulate spatial patterns, which is useful when trying to solve multi-faceted problems. At present, however, the jury is still out on this one, and the choice as to whether or not to listen to music while working is a personal one. Some offices allow the playing of music out loud, but if yours doesn’t, you could still pop in your iPod and listen quietly.
Music for Airports
Brian Eno’s ambient classic album was designed specifically to have a relaxing effect on listeners. As the name suggests, it was put together for people waiting around in airports, to relax the mind whilst being just entertaining enough to take people’s minds off the fact that they would shortly be thirty thousand feet in the air at the mercy of a couple of engines, two wings and a big hunk of metal.
Three Little Birds
This Bob Marley classic simply cannot fail to make everyone in the office feel uplifted. The lyrics ‘don’t worry about a thing, ‘cause every little thing is gonna be alright’ brighten up even the most strenuous work day, and it’s one of those tunes that you will all be whistling for weeks to come.

Move On Up
You can’t go wrong with a bit of Curtis Mayfield crooning in the background while you clatter away at your keyboard. This track has a catchy rhythm and is guaranteed to put a smile on the face of even the most over-stressed member of staff.

Anything By The Beatles
The kings of pop have too many songs to choose from, so bung as many as you can fit onto your playlist. Even people who claim not to like the Beatles will find themselves joining in at the chorus, and the bouncy tunes keep everyone feeling lively and energetic all day long.
